Another Positive Review for my Magic Show!

Two weeks ago, I was engaged to do a show for the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS). The show was held in NUS Guild House and it was a wonderful performing experience as I entertained the guest during the cocktail reception as well as the dinner.

A picture request from a guest

The truth is, the performance was only half the experience. I enjoyed working with Maggie who is the Secretariat of the CEO, in advising the best kind of magic entertainment, the best timing for the entertainment and the pros and cons for certain placements.

I am really happy that the client and the audiences enjoyed the performance and most importantly, enjoyed working with me. In fact, I am really pleased to share a feedback by the client:

Everyone enjoyed your show! The Magician who supported SERIS on 30th March 2012 at NUS Guild house brought additional colours to the group of SERIS crowds. He exercises professionalism in his work, flexible in the timing and provides supportive suggestions during the show. On behalf of SERIS, we would like to thank Alexander YUEN for his professional support!”

- Maggie Keng, Secretariat of the CEO, SERIS.

So awesome! This literally brighten up my day! =D

French Association Singapore: Le Grand Cabaret

That is correct, you read the title right, Le Grand Cabaret in Singapore!

Singapore Magician at Sentosa

An invitation to Le Grand Cabaret in Singapore

Last night, Jonathan, Samuel and myself were invited to perform for Association Française de Singapour’s (French Association Singapore) anniversary dinner at Amara Sanctuary Resort in Sentosa.

It was an exclusive event with French Ambassador as the Guest of Honour. We had much fun performing our brand of Interactive Roving Magic in a cabaret setting and style.

Meta Illusions Singapore Magicians

Samuel entertaining the Cabaret performers with his magic!

During our breaks, some of the performers requested us to perform magic for them. The performance was different from other venues and events as the guests were mostly french. We had to customize our magic slightly to accommodate to their culture. We did our magic in burst of 3 to 5 minutes, so that they can enjoy the food as well. The reason why it was arranged in such a way is because of the French culture of putting down their utensils when there is a programme going on. Hence they gave us their utmost attention whenever we approached and performed for their table.

Overall, I think the Meta Illusions team did an extremely good job. The President, Christine, thanked us personally after the last set. We do look forward to pictures and their publication which would feature some of our magic highlights. =)

So now…. I am really excited to share the news that Jonathan’s episode will be aired next Tuesday, that’s right, on Valentine’s Day. Check out the trailer!

Merry Christmas!

So, its gonna be Christmas time once again. A time of feasting, a time of partying and a time to celebrate with loved ones and family.

Season Greetings from Meta Illusions!

I was really fortunate to be able to share my magic and bringing smiles and laughter to adults and children. I brought the Close Up Theatre show to a Water Place Condo for a private performance. I performed for the family’s friends and relatives both consisting of adults and children.

An impossible feat of magic

Many of the adults have seen magic shows in children and kids parties. I had a lot of positive feedback about how the Close Up Theatre Show was something that was different from what they seen and that all of them felt involved in the progress of the show.

There were a couple of parents that came up to me after the show telling me that after watching my show, their kids want to learn magic! That is inspiring! I gave them several resources in which they can learn the fundamentals of magic. =)

It was an awesome Christmas eve. The feeling of bring joy and laughter is priceless. Merry Christmas readers and friends!

Merry Christmas!

An Exquisite Close Up Show by Alexander

The Close Up Theatre

I had the pleasure of presenting my Close Up Theatre Show in a private gathering.

MetaIllusions is proud to feature this show. With that said, this show is catered to private events with a small (30 pax) number of guest. The Close Up Theatre is a structured show, with a beginning and a grand finale. In fact, this show builds on the show I do at Bar84 during my 6 month stint there.

One of the highlights: Blind Man's Aces

Interactive and fun!

While this show is branded as a show for a corporate type of setting, it is suitable for a family crowd as well. With that said, this is not a kids show with silly gags and oversized props, do check with us so that we can ensure the best fit of entertainment for you.

The prelude to the Grand Finale

I am really excited about this show, in fact, I am pleased to announced that for this particular show, we already have bookings for it in the new year. That’s pretty awesome!

This is an exciting post!

I am very please to announce that I have been selected once again to be a part of the M for Magic production in Season 2. This is so awesome.

In fact, last Sunday was really hectic due to filming. I managed to sneak some pictures. I will just post one for a teaser.

Posing for Street Magic introduction

Jonathan Low was also part of the production. You guys should stay tuned for his episode, I am confident to say, it is very unique and hardly done in Singapore.

Customized magic for HSBC

A couple of weeks ago, I was working together with a good friend to come up with a customized show for HSBC.

It was a pretty unique concept in which they wanted key members of the senior management to be involved in the show, in addition to that, the Vice President was to perform a magic trick for the company.

Challenge Accepted.

So I came up with several routines customized to this particulat request. Also, I manage to put up a routine which was simple enough for the VP to perform, at the same time not one that was too kiddish.

The end result was a success, the organizers and the senior management enjoyed my show and found my style a good fit for their event.

Thoughts on magic

Magic….

People tend to believe that magic is just for children. But that is not the case. While its definitely true that children are more willing to entertain magical thoughts, it is probably not accurate to say that adults do not.

Capella Hotel

Last week, I was performing at Capella Hotel at Sentosa for about 180 foreign delegates from all over the world. What strike me was that, I was performing for highly successful men and women from different countries and all of them are highly educated, they all had an appreciation for magic. Men and women were laughing at something unexplainable and initutively impossible.

So, that got me thinking, what exactly is so special about magic. I have my own thoughts, mostly from the academic understanding of the emotion awe and amazement, but right now, let me share with you what my friends and people around me think.

About 3 years ago, one of my good friend mentioned that magic is an art because as with all arts, it has the power to bring people from one emotional state to another. He made a very good point about magic, it actually isn’t just about the emotion of amazment, some magic pieces pulls your heart strings and make you feel the emotion of empathy, and others makes you feel excited.

An example would be David Copperfield’s Grandpa’s Ace.

But what I think makes magic really special is this, behind all the deception, it makes you think about reality. And I think Senior Minister of State, Mr Heng Chee How, who recently commented on my blog said it very elegantly.

Yes indeed Mr Heng, magic does make you curious and makes you contemplate what is possible. This is the paradoxical nature of magic, it is the deception that makes you aware of the reality.

Let me end with one of my favourite videos of a magician who incorporates elements of humour, suspense and drama in his magic. A wonderful piece by Wayne Dobson.

A radio interview: 93.3FM “我有我的Young”

Samuel and I had another amazing interview with Kunhua. This time we spoke about magicians in general, the M for Magic Live show and how does one train to be a magician.

I have to say, my chinese is not that good, but thanks to my friends and Kunhua, I managed to scrape by. If you were there, you probably would have been amused by the expression of my face when I struggle to find the appropriate chinese word. Funny!

We did take some pictures, so do check them out!
