Pasarbella Soft Launch Event

Last weekend was Pasarbella’s soft launch and I was very excited to be invited to perform my magic for the launch. I was excited for two reasons, the first reason was that I am always excited about sharing my magic and the second reason was that I love farmers’ market! I remember fondly of my exchange semester in America and travelling to the different states and their farmers’ market. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to be able to re-experience the joys of fresh food and vibrancy in Pasarbella.

And I was not disappointed at all. The stalls in Pasarbella had very fresh seafood, pastries and food.

Upon entry, I was greeted by the fresh aroma of the sea. The seafood was huge and looks really fresh. They had a wide selection of fresh prawns, oysters, fish and crabs. Simply delightful!

My role at the soft launch of Pasarbella was to add to the vibrancy and buzz of the market. As such, I recommended sets of Interactive Roving Magic with Street Theatre shows interspersed throughout the day. I specifically declined doing a stage show because it would demand too much of the public’s attention and time. And it was my stand that the highlight should really be the stalls.

As you can tell, I also made several changes to my usual attire. Given the context, I decided to “dress down” so that I would fit into the Farmer’s Market theme. I added some accessories and quirky colours in my attire to make me stand out, without making me look out of place. In contrast, wearing a suit and a tie would make me stand out, but look out of place in this event. With that said, I have to put a disclaimer that there is nothing inherently interesting with a magician who dresses in bright flashy clown colours. If he fails to deliver good magic, no amount of coloured polka dots would make the audiences want to stay to continue watching him.

Crowd starting to gather behind

Crowd starting to gather behind

The curious crowd gathered to see what was behind the “oooo-s and ahhhh-s” during my performance. Having noticed a pattern in crowd formation in my performing experience, I anticipated this to happen. That was why I strongly recommended Street Theatre to be featured so that I could perform to a larger group curious audiences and satisfy their curiousity through a good performance.

To add a personal touch to the show, I deliberately used the produce from the stalls. As you can see in the next picture, I produced a rock melon and 2 tangerines from a stall called Tangy Tangerines and the onion and lemon from a stall called Sg Organic. I also gave out balloons from my good friends, Brenda and Pearlyn’s stall: Party Blasters. This not only entertained the public, but also “educated” them and made them aware of what Pasarbella had to offer. Since it was cogent with the magic, I gave these stalls a shout-out and a quick pitch in the performance. ;)

I resumed my roving magic after the Street Theatre set and I was very privileged to perform for the brilliant mind of the Pasarbella, Mr Clovis Lim. Clovis was featured on several publications about the concept and creation of Pasarbella. He is truly a young entrepreneur who dares to take an idea and push it into realization.

Very much like the conception of Meta Illusions’ Street Theatre show (which was inspired by street shows in America and Europe, not seen in Singapore), Pasarbella was conceived from other global markets. And prior to Pasarbella, there weren’t any “farmers’ market” in Singapore. I take my hat off to Clovis and team in being brave and bringing this first-of-its-kind idea into life in Singapore.

Pasarbella Singapore

I did several Street Theatre shows during the launch on each day. Given the wideness of the place, I alternated my shows between both ends of the market to maximize visibility and engagement of the public.

There were a lot more children in the audience in the West side of the market because of Party Blaster’s bouncy castle but it did not affect the show as it was specially designed to engage children and adults, without having to be too kiddish nor clownish. This is the strength of a well designed show that aims to provide fun and magic, instead of aiming to “cater to kids” or “cater to adults”.

Audience participation and anticipation :)

All in all, it was a super fun experience performing at Pasarbella and reliving the sights and sounds of a farmer’s market. I am really glad that I was able to add buzz, colour and energy to the event making it fun for children, adults and families in general.

PAssionArts Festival 2013: Arts for everyone

“Hi Alexander,

I have to give a huge thanks to you for all your help in this event! You were a real crowd-puller, and you were really great in engaging with the residents. Many were impressed with your magic and I believe your presence really helped to make the event a success. So thank you!”

Nur Hazwany Mohd Razali (Ms) Constituency Manager

One of the visions of PAssionArts is to showcase “Arts and Culture for Everyone, Everywhere, Everyday”. This was also one of my ideals while developing Street Theatre in 2010 after returning from America and experiencing the numerous sideshows on the streets and festivals.

When thinking about magic shows and performances, one might think of a grand stage and a theatre or a platform where the magician’s profile is accentuated. While these shows are fairly common, they are less accessible to the general public simply due to the technical requirements and setup of the performance. Street Theatre, on the other hand, does not require such technical arrangements therefore making it an art form that is truly for everyone and everywhere.

Stage Magic Performance at PassionArts Festival

Stage Magic Performance at PassionArts Festival

Last weekend, I was very fortunate to be engaged by Changi Simei Community Club for both Street Theatre and Stage Magic in their PAssionArts Festival. It was truly a series of fortunate events as one of the organizers was a Psychology major in NUS and had watched my performance in The Swing Thing at the NUS Arts Festival. She was inspired by the message in the play and decided to give me a shot in the PAssionArts Festival. Thank you for the leap of faith! : )

Engaging everyone: The new generation of Singapore, as well as the older generation

Engaging everyone: The new generation of Singapore, as well as the older generation

The beauty of Street Theatre goes beyond its minimalistic technical requirements. It is the very fact that the performance does not hide behind a “4th wall” (a technical term for performances that does not engage/acknowledge the presence of an audience, like dance and traditional theatre), and that the magic props are objects that look real and does not depend on special mechanisms. Because of this show design and structure, very often I have audiences telling me the same thing “I have seen a lot of magic shows, but today, I have seen the real thing!”.

360 degree audience (a circle show)

360 degree audience (a circle show)

With the vision of performing this show “everywhere”, one of the fundamental designs of the show was the material. Unlike magic performances that needs a special backdrop, this show can be done surrounded. I suspect this is one other reason why audiences think that they have seen “real magic”.

Arts and Culture for Everyone, Everywhere, Everyday

In closing, Street Theatre is a unique show that fits very nicely in festivals and even arts festivals where the engagement and interaction of the audiences brings a new dimension of theatre and Street Theatre is a magic artform , that can be appreciate up close regardless of age or language.

iPad Magic at RazorTV

Last mid-December, Meta Illusions was approached by Singapore Press Holdings(SPH) for an interview. SPH was writing a story on “Unusual uses of tablets” and during their research, they found a video of me performing iPad Magic in SinemaTV’s M For Magic 2 Series.

Ipad Magic for M for Magic 2

Ipad Magic for M for Magic 2

While my episode in M For Magic 2 was released in Feb 2012, the footage was shot back in Dec 2011. Since then, the team has been brainstorming and working hard to figure out how iPad Magic could be turned into a commercially viable product offering that adds value to our clients. It turns out that iPad Magic can be used as a powerful, captivating medium for storytelling and to communicate key messages to audiences.

Esquire Magazine Men’s Night Out

In the beginning of December, the team at Meta Illusions was approached by Esquire Magazine to be a part of their inaugural Men’s Night Out. Despite our heavy schedule in December, mainly engagements for private parties and dinners, we expressed our interest to be a part of the Men’s Night Out.

After several emails and phone calls, we were booked for this event at the very sleek Avalon at Marina Bay Sands (MBS). Closer to the event itself, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the reason why the marketing team at Esquire was so bent at getting the magicians at Meta Illusions to perform was that they felt that we suited their branding of the charming and suave gentleman in contrast to other magicians that were too clownish or cheesy. They got us so that their overall theme of celebrating “Men at His Best” would be enhanced.

Two-Thirds of Meta Illusions; Samuel and Alexander

Samuel and myself went down to the event in our usual attire, a classy suit, and made sure we looked our best as always. We warmed up the crowd with our brand of close up magic, performing our feats of amazement in the spectator’s hand.

Intimate miracles happening in the spectator’s hand

Of course, what differentiates ourselves from other magicians is our natural ability to engage and interact with our audiences. What this means is that our performance is never a passive one in which the audience members simply take a back seat and watch. They would actively and voluntarily take part in it as we worked hard to script and routine our performance so that it is only natural that the audiences will feel compelled to be involved.

Interacting with our audiences

Awesome feeling of amazement!

It was a great performance, Samuel and myself had a ball of a time! The audiences were there to have fun and we made their night even more enjoyable by adding that extra touch of magic. This enhanced the atmosphere of the whole event and when the main programme began on stage, everyone was loosen up and ready to have more fun!

Men at Their Best, indeed!

And we are very pleased to share with you that because the organizers felt that we added that magical touch to their event, we will be featured in the next issue of Esquire Singapore! Do look out for that!

Liam Neeson telling you not to miss Meta Illusions on the next issue of Esquire Singapore!

With that, Meta Illusions would like to wish all our readers, friends and love ones a Happy New 2013 ahead!

Corporate Magic at Bentley and McLaren Showrooms

November was a really hectic month for myself as I was being called back for reservist at the Naval Diving Unit. Fortunately for me, I have two excellent and extremely competent team mates, Jonathan and Samuel, to help me with the shows, planning and consultation.

Earlier in the month, I did a corporate performance at the Bentley and McLaren showrooms. It was a gathering for Hewlett-Packard Alumni members.

Sexy car!

It was an evening of fun and nostalgia for the members as they caught up over dinner. One of the main reason why Interactive Roving Magic or Close Up Magic was recommended to be the best form of entertainment for this event was that the organizer had the intention for the members to catch up and network.

Given the agenda of the event organizer and the dynamics of the interaction, a stage show would not have been the best option as it “forces” everyone to watch the magician in performance and forsaking conversations.

Magic with a borrowed Handphone

Roving magic allows the experienced magician to discern which tables/guests are taking a break in their conversation. Likewise, it is very important for the magician to identify which tables are deep into business conversations. Such skills come with time and experience. Needless to say, Interactive Roving Magic gives the magician the liberty to entertain those table who are ready to let loose and watch and participate in the magic.

Corporate Magic: Sleek and Intellectual

It was a great coincidence for me to meet some of my previous clients in this event! And they were not surprised that I was the magician for this evening as they knew Meta Illusions’ style of magic was in line with the evening’s programme.

I personally enjoyed this event very much, it was fun interacting and mingling with the members of HP alumni. And I also got to try out new magic which had been working on for 2 years!

I will be heading out to another Interactive Close Up Magic performance this evening at the very beautiful Mt Faber. Catch you all soon!

Interactive, Charming and Sleek Close Up Magic

If you have been following my blog, you would realize that I have been doing quite a fair share of my Street Theatre shows. I enjoy them very much, I enjoy the energy I can rouse from the crowd, I enjoy the fact that I can gather people from different walks of life and towards the end of show, they feel the cohesion and cheer and clap as one unified group. That feeling is amazing.

However, I also enjoy close up magic very much. It is simply different, it brings a different dimension of entertainment.

(Picture Credits to: Lionel Lin, www.lionellin.com. Thanks for capturing the moments!)

Close Up Intimate Magic

Close up magic allows the magician to interact with the audiences at an extremely close proximity. This means that the audiences may actually examine the magician’s props, ask him questions and even request for specific effects. I love such interaction and by-play with my audiences.

Last week, I was very honored to be invited to National University of Singapore FASS Family Host Dinner. The audiences consist of international students as well as Singaporeans. It is always nice and enjoyable performing in “home ground” (that is because I am an NUS Alumni).

Interacting and getting to know the students

I thoroughly enjoyed interacting and talking to the international students and performing magic at the same time. Got to discover more about their diverse backgrounds and why they chose NUS as their choice for exchange programme. One thing is certain, despite their backgrounds, the expression of amazement seems to be very consistent across cultures. Now that is something to research about!

In this picture: United States of America, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and Singapore. ; )

Performing for the China students!

Not only did I entertain the students, I too performed for the friendly staff from FASS Dean’s Office. They are the unsung heroes, or rather heroines of the event. The whole event would not have been a success if it weren’t for their hard work.

Magic happening in their hands!

I also had the privilege to perform for FASS Dean, Professor Brenda Yeoh and Vice Dean Professor TC Chang. It was really really awesome.

Then I ended the night with my Street Theatre finale!

The crowd had lots of fun when I got Assistant Dean, Professor Vincent Ooi to help me on stage. The by-play was hilarious and made the performance unique and special.

Professor Vincent Ooi!

And of course, the big finish: Professor Vincent Ooi finds his $50 note inside a lemon!

Big finish! Money inside of a fruit!

It was truly a fun evening for me and the audiences. It feels really good to be back for a performance and meeting many wonderful people in the process. =)

Corporate Magic at Networking Event

In June, I was specially engaged for a corporate networking event by DHL in which their guests consist their most important clients.

Presenting my chic style of magic in front of a beautiful rustic building

This engagement involves me performing 2 sets of Interactive Close Up Magic segment and one Stage Magic Show for the finale. I worked closely with Michelle in advising the best placement of magic.

We split the Interactive Close Up Magic segment into two parts because in such cocktail networking sessions, guests will arrive in different timings. For those who arrive early, they typically do not have much activities to do. Hence, it is most appropriate to have a magician interact and entertain them before the main activities of the event.

Priceless expression : O

Thereafter, I also performed the second Interactive Close Up magic segment slightly after dinner is served. Restaurateurs might have the false impression that featuring close up magic during dinner would be akin to disturbing their guests during their meal. While this concern is valid, the years of experience I have performing in high end restaurants  allowed me to discern the best timing to approach a table. It also made salient to me when the guests are taking a break from the food. Such an approach comes with the years of experience that a younger or semi-professional magician may not have the privilege to gather. Towards the end of the evening, I then presented my Stage Magic show as one of the entertainment finale to this networking event.

Audience participation during the magic

The stage magic show was a strong closer as it gathered everyone in the event and they all participated in the magic. It features music and visual magic. In the show, I got a gentleman (John, above) to help me with the magic. And after the show, another gentleman came up to me and thanked me for the magic. And he said if I have not chosen John to help in the show, he would not have been able to meet his friend who he had lost contact for many many years. At that point of time, my hair kinda stood due to the uncanny coincidence. But also, I think this is truly what magic is about, it is about bringing people together. This left me with a strange but yet fulfilling feeling knowing that on top of doing the show well and everyone enjoying it, I have established contact for two separate individuals who had not seen each other for more than a decade. That is, real magic! Once again, it is great to get affirmation from the events organizers and the committee!

“ At our recent Customer Event, Alexander stunned everyone with his amazing magic with his unbelievable sleight-of-hand. The performance was highly entertaining, either small groups or individually was just what was needed. He was professional and non-intrusive in his manner, whilst being friendly and approachable. People were left in awe by the seemingly impossible things he was doing! He was an invaluable addition to the evening’s activities, and one that I would recommend to any event! It was such a special night for us and you were an essential part of its success. Thank you so very much, Alexander! “

A Unique Wedding Dinner

The 19th of May 2012 might have been an ordinary day for the rest of the world, but for newly wedded couple, An Chyi and Herng Huei, it was their wedding night.

Special thanks to An Chyi and Herng Huei for the pictures!

Performing specially for the newly wedded couple

Even though I am frequently engaged to perform for wedding dinners, every single one of them leaves a warm, fuzzy feeling in me. I should also mention that this wedding dinner had a special theme: Alice in Wonderland. Therefore, to add that magical touch to the wedding, I was engaged to perform for the guests and to fill the atmosphere with amazement.

Performing for the couple’s VIP table
Close Up Magic

There were several tables that preferred me to perform in Mandarin. And thankfully for my team and I, we are all effectively bilingual. This is also a common challenge to most wedding performers as the audience demographics are diverse and the performers need to be strong and flexible in terms of performance material.

The moment of amazement captured in a picture

I was also pleasantly surprised to meet my friend, Bernice and her fiance! Even though Bernice had seen me perform my magic on several occasions, she was delighted to have me perform at her table.

It is always a good feeling to know that you added that touch of magic to a couple’s special night, and I am also very happy to share some positive feedback from the lovely couple:

“Dear Alexander,

Thank you for your wonderful performance on our big day. We received great feedback from our guests – they loved you! :)

Thank you once again Alexander!

Best Wishes,

An Chyi and Herng Huei

From Taiwan”

Brings me great joy to know that I was a part of their unforgettable celebration!

So if you are planning a wedding and would like to add that special touch of magic to your wedding night, do drop us an email at info@metaillusions.com or give us a call (9745973). We’ll be more than happy to discuss such possibilities and work with you every step of the way!

Close Up Theatre and Magic Workshop for AIA

Last month, I had the privilege to do a unique performance for the friendly people at AIA. It was a session in which I performed a small portion of my Close Up Theatre set and Interactive Close Up magic, which ended with  a Teach-in seminar.

Finale to the Close Up Theatre set
A mini “Circle Show”

One of the main reasons why I personally decided to take up the teach-in was because of the inspirational theme of using magic. Under the leadership of District Manager, Mr Peter Lee, he wanted to showcase to his team that even though something seems impossible, it can be achievable as long as you put effort into it.

This message resonated with me and I took up the challenge. I arranged 3 effects of varying difficulties and true enough, Mr Lee and his colleagues were all able to execute them after considerable practice.

Hands on practice

The effects were handpicked based on the following criteria:

1. It cannot be a kiddish trick as it is not in line with Meta Illusions’ policy to perform kiddish tricks, let alone teach a trick that is kiddish/clownish in nature

2. There needs to be demonstration of skill involved. Because we conduct classes for youths and professional working adults, an effect is more amazing and appealing if some feats of dexterity are displayed.

3. The tricks are not heavily exposed in other mediums accessible to the general public.

With this set of criteria, my proposal was approved.

Experiential learning and group based teaching

Apart from inculcating the theme of the seminar, learning magic as a group is fun! It can create a culture of learning and sharing. It also fosters teambuilding.

Teaching and sharing within the group

I had a lot of fun teaching and performing to this group of spontaneous and fun-loving people. And I strongly believe that while magic can be performed for just entertainment’s sake, there are other subtexts that magic can exemplify, hence, creating an underlying theme or lesson.

Magic Entertainment for Weddings?

Several weeks ago, Samuel and I were privileged to be engaged to perform Close Up Magic and interact with the family and guests of the very lovely bride, Pei Shi, and bridegroom, Pui Chuan. Magic in this wedding was customized so that it flowed in conjunction with the sequence of events.

First, we performed and mingled with the guests during the cocktail reception. This is the segment where guests are streaming in and drinks are served. The guests are not yet seated and would mostly be standing. Hence, the kind of magic that we did was largely in-the-hands magic that did not require the use of a table. Also, because of the interactive features of our Close Up Magic, we were able to break the ice between the guests of the husband and the guests of the wife as both sides shared a common experience of magic and were able to make small talk about the magic they witnessed.

Cocktail Reception Magic

After our first segment, the guests were ushered into the dining hall. Typical Chinese wedding dinners often start later than the stated timing. Hence, in the next segment, Samuel and I went to the various tables in the evening to perform. This segment allows the guests to be entertained while waiting for other guests to arrive. We performed our magic and interacted with the guests all the way till the march-in, and thereafter the emcees took over.

Close Up Magic for Weddings

The magic garnered very positive responses from the lovely wedding couple as well as their guests. We were very touched to receive affirmation for our work. The wedding couple even wrote us a testimony:

“Our greatest thanks to Alexander and Samuel for making our already special night even more special! Alexander is very accommodating and flexible towards our requests. He is always ready to offer help and suggestions when we were planning our program. Our guests really enjoyed the magic. It was a really good time-filler. Thanks guys!!”

Indeed, we did our jobs as magicians and performed magic as it was intended to be in a wedding setting. We acknowledged that we were not the highlight of the wedding, so we did not propose a full-blown stage performance, which might take away the limelight from the wedding couple. Instead, we took on a supporting role and allowed the bride and bridegroom to shine on their very special night. I am very glad that we achieved our objectives and made the couple look special as they ought to be.

Performing magic for children

On a side note, it is also important to engage a magician who is well-versed in performing for children. This is especially true in a wedding setting because more often than not, there will be children present among the wedding guests. You will need a strong and experienced magician who has the abilities to handle children. Despite our “corporate” image, Samuel and I have been performing magic for children for at least 4 years! This equips us with the necessary skill set and abilities to handle them, as well as entertain them. You can be assured that we do not perform magic that is crass or kiddish for children.

One common problem for some Singapore magicians who cater to weddings is that they do not have the necessary skill set to appropriately deal with children at these weddings. This becomes an issue when they perform for children who are slightly more active and curious. This curiosity could break the flow of the magic (if the child wants to examine the props) and possibly disrupt the flow of the wedding (child getting upset over not being able to examine the props). Hence, it is integral to get the right magician for the event.

I hope this article is useful for soon-to-be brides and bridegrooms. I have had several emails inquiring the feasibility of magic for weddings. Suffice to say, magic may not be the best form of entertainment for all weddings, depending on the concept and venue. Please consult us if you do wish to have magicians for your wedding, or would like to discuss the feasibility of doing so. Meta Illusions offers a free consultation, so do not hesitate to contact us here at http://www.metaillusions.com/contact-us/ or give us a call at 97459753.
